The Zimbabwe Freight Observatory
What does it actually cost to ship from the US to Zimbabwe? The honest answer is scattered — a per-kilo rate in a WhatsApp pitch here, a rate guide that stops at the border there, and calculators that never say whether Zimbabwe duty is inside the number they show you. The Observatory puts the published figures in one place: every lane, every carrier, the source it came from, the date we last verified it, and a plain answer to the one question that decides the real price — is duty inside it, or not?
How we work: we read the carrier's own pages and rate guides. Nothing here is a quote negotiated for us, and no carrier paid to be listed or ranked. Where a carrier publishes no number, the board says so — a blank is information too. Rates change: a figure here is the published figure on the date shown, not a promise it is today's, and the final duty on any shipment is ZIMRA's assessment at clearance.
Tengaikoko publishes this board as a public reference. We are not a rated carrier on it and we publish no per-kilo freight rate of our own — our own delivered prices are the all-in prices on our product pages.
🧮 What would it actually land for?
Enter a shipment and see the estimated landed total per lane — goods, freight, and, on lanes where duty sits outside the carrier's price, the duty and VAT estimated from the verified ZIMRA tariff line. Lanes that publish no computable rate say so instead of inventing a number.
Customs basis: ZIMRA National Tariff Handbook (S.I. 203 of 2022), line 8517.13.00 — smartphones at 25% duty; VAT 15.5% (ZIMRA Public Notice 07/2026) on the duty-inclusive value. Insurance is counted as US$0 — add your real premium to the goods value if you insure. Other goods carry other tariff lines; a licensed clearing agent confirms the exact line.
Corridor consolidators — US → Zimbabwe specialists
The diaspora lane: firms whose whole business is moving parcels from the US to Zimbabwe. The cheapest published per-kilo prices live here — and so do the two honest blanks that matter most: whether duty is inside the price, and what electronics really cost.
Pack&Ship
US$23/kgAir freight, departures every 2 weeks
Duty: not published. Not published — “customs clearance support” only
- The cheapest published air rate on the corridor.
- Whether Zimbabwe duty and VAT sit inside the $23/kg is not published anywhere on their site — the single most important open question on this lane. The calculator therefore treats duty as extra and estimates it.
- Professional repacking and tracking are included in the rate. Minimum charge and volumetric formula: not published.
- Pack&Ship also runs a personal-shopping service for Zimbabwe customers.

Tisu Air Freight
US$25/kg, marketed all-inAir freight, weekly; 7–10 days after dispatch
Duty included. Included — marketed as covering duty and all fees
- The corridor benchmark: US$250 for a 10 kg carton, fully landed, on their marketed terms.
- Honest caveat: Tisu's own website prices phones and electronics as “special pricing”, so US$25/kg may not be their final electronics price. The board carries the pitch figure — with this caveat — until a published electronics tariff exists.
- Collection in Harare, or onward courier inside Zimbabwe.

Selfcare ZW
US$30/kg + 10% of goods value handlingAir freight, monthly shipments only; 10–14 business days
Duty included. Included — published as “shipping + duty”
- The only fully published duty-inclusive rate on the corridor — and the dearest way to move electronics: the 10% handling fee adds US$300 on US$3,000 of phones before the per-kilo rate is counted.
- Minimum charge US$30. Handling rises to 20% of goods value if they purchase the goods for you.
- Monthly flights only — the slowest tempo on the board.

Vipta Global
Quote-only — no published rateAir freight, twice a month (Maryland warehouse)
Duty included. Included by their published model — “prices are inclusive of customs and excise duties unless stated otherwise”
- The most promising blank on the board: a duty-inclusive pricing model pointed at this corridor — at a price only a quote reveals. The calculator shows no number because they publish none.
- Published catches: goods are not insured and they accept no liability for loss; delivery is Harare-only; storage fees start 2 days after clearance.
- Their own pages contradict themselves on batteries — “Batteries” are prohibited, yet lithium-battery items “must be labelled correctly”. Installed-battery devices need written confirmation before any shipment.

Zion Shipping
Quote-only — priced per parcel by their calculatorCarrier-resale platform; air 4–8 business days via carrier partners
Duty extra. Extra — their own guide says duties are calculated separately
- A generalist forwarding platform reselling FedEx, DHL and UPS capacity plus its own consolidated service — not a Zimbabwe house carrier.
- No per-kilo tariff is published; every price comes out of their quote calculator, so the board carries no figure.

MyUS
US$116.48 per 10 lb (4.54 kg) — band table stops at 10 lbConsumer parcel forwarder (Aramex lane, 5–8 days)
Duty extra. Extra by default — prepay offered “for eligible shipments”
- The cheapest published band works out at about US$25.70/kg at 4.54 kg — no better than the benchmark, with duties still extra.
- No 10 kg price is published; the table ends at 10 lb, and the board does not stretch a band table into a per-kilo rate.
- Caution from their own page: a standing alert (dated 2015, still shown) lists “electrical/electronic appliances” among categories prohibited into Zimbabwe — dated, but it sits on the current page and needs clarification before electronics are shipped this way.

The majors — DHL, FedEx, UPS
Published list prices for the exact shipment are 2× to 4× the corridor benchmark, and every one of them leaves Zimbabwe clearance to someone else: no major acts as importer of record in Zimbabwe, and what they sell as “duties paid” is a billing arrangement, not clearance. A Harare importer with a Business Partner Number still files the entry.
UPS
US$519.51 flat per box up to 10 kgWorldwide Saver “10 KG Box” (list price)
Duty extra. Extra — and UPS's Zimbabwe agent does not clear
- The cheapest published major-carrier price for the exact shipment — about US$52/kg — and it is freight only.
- UPS's Zimbabwe agent delivers documents only; parcels clear through alternate brokers or are collected, because the agent is not registered as a clearing agent. A Harare clearing arrangement is effectively mandatory on top.
- Zimbabwe duty is calculated on a value that includes the freight charge — the calculator follows that rule.
- Standard Saver list at 22 lb was US$948.82 in the same guide; the box rate applies only while the box stays at or under 10 kg.

DHL Express
US$1,115.70 per 10 kg carton (≈US$112/kg)Express Worldwide (list price)
Duty extra. Extra — “Duties and Taxes Paid” is a billing arrangement, not DDP
- The cleanest end-to-end machine on the board — own clearance, a shipment-protection product, clear battery rules — at the most expensive published price.
- DHL itself states that DTP bills the duties to the shipper; it does not make DHL the importer of record in Zimbabwe, and extra clearance charges can apply.
- List prices are published by weight band, not per kilo, so the calculator does not stretch them into a per-kg figure. Negotiated account rates are not published anywhere.

FedEx
Not published — quote in practiceInternational Priority
Duty extra. Billed to the recipient unless the air waybill is marked “Bill Shipper”
- The service profile fits small electronics cartons (pieces to 68 kg, clearance included) — but no public price exists: FedEx directs Zimbabwe customers to call for a quote.
- FedEx acts as the sender's or recipient's agent to clear. It is expressly not an importer-of-record substitute.

Forwarders & importer-of-record services
The contract world: real capability, no published prices. Every figure here is quote-only because the firms publish none. The two importer-of-record services are the structural answer for a seller with no Zimbabwe entity — at a price only a quote reveals.
TecEx
Quote-only — fees not publishedImporter-of-record / DDP for tech imports
Duty included. Handled as importer of record — duty and VAT inside their quote
- Built for exactly this problem: a seller with no Zimbabwe entity importing technology. They handle pre-compliance, clearance and delivery to any site in Zimbabwe.
- Their process flags pre-shipment inspection and a Certificate of Conformity for most goods, CBCA for certain HS codes, and import permits for some categories.

One Union Solutions
Quote-only — fees not publishedImporter-of-record + DDP
Duty included. Handled as importer of record — itemised inside their quote
- Their quotes itemise the importer-of-record fee, duty & VAT, conformity/permit charges and brokerage/transport separately — the most transparent structure among the quote-only lanes.
- They warn plainly that DDP alone does not supply importer registration or permits — the two are different things.

CEVA Logistics
Quote-only — no published rateAir freight + Harare customs clearing (AMI/MANICA)
Duty: not published. Not published for Zimbabwe — brokerage offered, DDP/IOR not verified
- The strongest published Zimbabwe footprint of any forwarder: a Harare operation with customs clearing, via the AMI/MANICA integration.
- World-first holder of IATA's CEIV Lithium Battery certification — the strongest published battery credentials on the board.

Kuehne+Nagel
Quote-only — no published rateAir freight — Harare in its own air schedule
Duty: not published. Not published for Zimbabwe — DDP/IOR not verified
- The one self-serve door among the big forwarders: myKN is free to join and quotes instantly. Whether it returns a US→Harare price for a small carton is not verified — it costs nothing to test with your own shipment.

DSV (Schenker)
Quote-only — no published rateAir freight — partner-served in Harare
Duty: not published. Not published for Zimbabwe — DDP/IOR not verified
- Zimbabwe is served through named Harare partners (Bak Logistics / Key Logistics), not DSV's own office.

Sea freight — the bulky phase
Priced per cubic metre, not per kilo, and measured in weeks. Sea is the only credible mode for solar and bulky volume; it never makes sense for a carton of phones.
Sea freight — LCL (shared container)
US$72–140 per CBM (published indications)US East Coast/Gulf → Durban → road to Harare
Duty extra. Extra — cleared in Zimbabwe like any other import
- About 1 CBM minimum. Door-to-door typically 35–50 days.
- Durban destination handling can exceed the ocean freight on small shipments — the cheap per-CBM figure is not the whole bill.
- The Beira corridor runs cheaper inland on industry estimates but with less predictable processing.
- Priced per cubic metre, so a weight-only calculator cannot price it honestly — measure your volume and treat the range as the starting point.

Sea freight — FCL (full container)
US$5,500–9,000 per containerUSA → Zimbabwe, planning range
Duty extra. Extra — cleared in Zimbabwe like any other import
- Add US$1,500–2,000 for Durban→Harare trucking when it is not included in the container price.
- FCL only starts to beat LCL at roughly 12–15 CBM and up.

The Zimbabwe side — facts every lane shares
- Duty is charged on CIF — the value of the goods plus insurance plus freight. Expensive freight makes the duty bill bigger, not just the freight bill.
- Clearing-agent fees in Harare norm around 2% of CIF (ZimTrade Guide to Importing). The calculator uses that norm, labelled as an estimate, on lanes where duty is extra.
- The importer needs a Business Partner Number activated for customs and an ITF 263 tax clearance. Without an ITF 263, a 10% Informal Cross Border Trader's Tax applies on top of duty before goods are released.
- No major carrier acts as importer of record in Zimbabwe. On every duty-extra lane, a BPN-holding Harare clearer is structurally part of the price of landing goods — whoever flies the box.
- Airline cargo is forwarder-mediated and quote-only across the board. One published refusal matters for pre-owned stock: Emirates SkyCargo's Zimbabwe conditions (1 October 2026) do not accept used or refurbished lithium-battery equipment at all.
Verification log
The board is re-verified weekly. Every change — a rate moved, a carrier newly silent, a blank finally filled — is posted here, dated, whether it flatters the board or not.
Board opened. First full verification pass across the corridor: consolidators, the majors' 2026 rate guides, forwarders and importer-of-record services, sea indications, and Zimbabwe-side clearing rules. Every figure on the board was read from the carrier's own published pages or guides on this date; nobody was contacted and no quote was requested.
Pack&Ship still does not publish whether Zimbabwe duty sits inside its US$23/kg — the board carries the rate with duty marked “not published”, and the calculator estimates duty on top rather than guessing it is included.
Vipta Global, TecEx and One Union Solutions still publish no numbers at all. Their rows show the published model (duty-inclusive / importer of record) and no figure — a blank is information too.
Tisu's US$25/kg is carried from their WhatsApp welcome pitch (October 2026). Their website prices phones and electronics as “special pricing”, so the pitch figure is labelled with that caveat until a published electronics tariff exists.
Emirates SkyCargo's Zimbabwe conditions (effective 1 October 2026) refuse used and refurbished lithium-battery equipment outright — recorded here so pre-owned shippers do not waste a quote request on that lane.
